“American Wasteland” is a title of a very important book about food waste written by Jonathan Bloom. On the other hand it also gives you a very close explanation of the reality of this powerful country. You can find out more about Jonathan and get familiar with his work on the blog – wastedfood.com.
A study published in the Public Library of Science, “The Progressive Increase of Food Waste in America and Its Environmental Impact”, demonstrates that Americans waste about 40% of their annual food supply. This number has almost doubled in the past 40 years, rising from 28% in 1974.
Other than the simple fact of wasting nutritious food, the study reveals that there are devastating impacts on the environment. In the United States, 1/4 of the annual freshwater consumption and about 300 million barrels of oil are used to make food that is wasted.
While decomposing, the food produces methane gas that is more potent in warming our planet than carbon dioxide. Read more by clicking here.
